educationAll participants need to be educated.  Even participants that intend to leave the heavy lifting to their financial advisor need to be conversant in retirement planning principles so they can ask the right questions and be better able to help their broker help them. 

Current participant education efforts coming up short
Employers are not satisfied with the resources provided to their participants.  Two of the three lowest rated services in Deloitte Consulting’s 2005/2006 Annual 401(k) Benchmarking Survey were employee communication/education and investment advice tools

The concerns expressed by plan sponsors in the Deloitte survey are well-placed in light other studies that confirm weak general investment and retirement planning understanding and illustrate how that lack of understand leads to poor investment decisions and a profound disconnect between participants’ retirement expectations and the likely realities.
